SOCIAL SKILLS PROGRAM

Origins and Philosophy

Academy MetroWest is an independently owned and operated children's group therapy program that has been helping children and their families since 1994. Groups at Academy MetroWest utilize cooperative, non-competitive physical activity as a means of helping children enhance social skills and self-image. By placing children in an environment that allows them to be physically active in a non-competitive setting, counselors at Academy MetroWest create an atmosphere in which children can relax, attain consistent concrete success, connect with their peers, improve their body image, and enjoy themselves. In this environment, children tend to feel less defensive, which enables them to hear social feedback from their counselors in its proper context

Academy MetroWest's approach is based on the idea that self-acceptance is a critical factor in children's ability to establish connections with their peers. While providing children with valuable feedback about their social interactions, we also focus intently on helping children develop perceptions of themselves as capable, competent, comfortable social beings. Academy MetroWest counselors work to establish strong, therapeutic relationships with children, aimed at helping them to focus on their assets and their role as a member of a group. Additionally, groups are structured in order to maximize success for their members, leading to the creation of more positive expectations, and increased self-confidence among participants. The non-competitive, physical nature of the program also helps children develop a more positive body image, which also tends to enhance their overall level of self-confidence. Direct feedback and natural consequences are used as methods of helping children observe and understand the effects that their behavior can have on those around them and, in turn, how that comes back to affect them.

Participants

Academy MetroWest works with children and adolescents aged 6-15. Owing to the social skills focus of our program, we see many clients with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Non-verbal Learning Disorder, Anxiety, various learning disabilities, and other issues in which social skills delays play a prominent role. However, a formal mental health diagnosis is not required for participation in a group at Academy MetroWest.

Groups

Children enrolled in Academy MetroWest are placed in a small, homogeneous group comprised of 3 to 6 other members. In order to maximize the chances for success, efforts are made to match children up as closely as possible based upon age, physical ability, and social/cognitive/psychological development.  This arrangement enables children to attain consistent, concrete success while feeling safe and challenged, but not overwhelmed. Groups meet once a week for 75 minutes and are led by trained mental health professionals. Activity groups are offered on weekdays after school hours as well as on Saturday mornings.

Enrollment & Fees

An initial interview involving the child and parent(s) is required for enrollment. Information from this interview is used as a guide in determining the best possible group placement for the child. There is a $90.00 fee for this session which lasts 75 - 90 minutes. This initial interview can be arranged by calling us at (508) 655-9200 Monday through Friday between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm.

For 2014-2015 the fee for an activity group (which meets once a week for an hour and fifteen minutes) is $59.00 per week if payment is made on or prior to the date of a child's first session. For payments made after a child's first session, the rate is $61.00 per week. Fees are collected on a pre-pay basis. Visa/Mastercard/American Express/Discover is accepted. Fee adjustments can be made on the basis of financial need.
